Infant Jesus of Prague
Gratiosus Jesulus Pragensis
Pražské Jezulátko, Santo Niño de Praga, Divino Menino Jesus de Praga, Prager Jesulein
The statuette comes from Spain, where it was probably made around the middle of the 16th century. Legend has it that Jesus, in his childhood form, miraculously appeared to a certain monk, who modeled this statue on the basis of his form. According to another legend, the statue was owned by Saint Theresa of Jesus, the founder of the Barefoot Carmelites, who was burning with great love for the Child Jesus. However, these legends are probably not based on real events.
